Six million dollars from the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund have been given by the UN to Borno State flood victims. The gift comes after hundreds of thousands of people were forced to flee their homes due to the collapse of the Alau Dam on September 10.
The state capital of Maiduguri was visited by a joint mission of UN agencies, non-governmental organizations, and the Nigeria Red Cross Society, according to UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric. The objective is to provide hot meals, water trucks, sanitary services, and food dropped by air to remote places.
The Director of the World Food Programme (WFP) office in Maiduguri, Emmanuel Bigenimana, claimed that the water caused major damage and that there was congestion in the IDP camps. In three camps, the WFP has established soup kitchens to offer wholesome meals to those who are most impacted.
Orders for evacuation were issued after the dam failed, submerging half of Maiduguri. Food insecurity and continuing conflict are made worse in the area by the ongoing crisis. To support both long-term recovery and emergency needs, more financing is being requested.
