An Israeli national who was allegedly enlisted by Iranian intelligence to plan the killings of prominent Israeli figures, such as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has been detained by Israeli police. This was disclosed by the police on Thursday in a joint statement.
The statement claimed that an Israeli national was paid to carry out operations while being transported into Iran twice.
According to the statement, among the targets were Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar, and other high-ranking officials.
The Israeli national, a businessman who spent a considerable amount of time living in Turkey, was introduced to an Iranian businessman named Eddie over the phone by Turkish and Iranian acquaintances, according to the authorities.
The Israeli, who the local media claimed to be a Jewish man from Ashkelon, first traveled to Iran in May 2024 to see Eddie because Eddie was having trouble leaving the country, according to the authorities.
Additionally, he met Hajjah, who was described as an Iranian security agent.
According to the authorities, he was instructed to do security tasks in Israel during this trip, such as sending money or a pistol, shooting images of busy public areas, and threatening other Israelis that Tehran had recruited.
The accused guy was transported into Iran in a lorry, according to an August investigation. He met with other Iranian intelligence officials and was ordered to carry out terrorist acts for Iran on Israeli soil, including encouraging assassination attacks.
A few of the suggested killings were described as payback for the July murder of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas, in Tehran.
Israel has been charged by Iran and Hamas with orchestrating Haniyeh’s demise.
Israel, however, has remained silent about the murder.
According to the authorities, the suspect was also instructed to carry out extra responsibilities, including as enlisting Mossad spy agency employees as double agents.
