The Federal Capital Territory Administration intends to phase out tricycle operations in select areas of the Abuja city center, according to proposals made by Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, or FCT.

This was said by Wike on Thursday at the FCT Renewed Hope Youth Empowerment Program’s kickoff.

Through the Renewed Hope Youth Empowerment Initiative, Wike emphasized the Federal Government’s dedication to enhancing the lives of young people in the FCT.

“I’m not claiming that Keke will disappear. No, you’ll visit specific locations. However, for the time being, we will attempt to observe the trial program in Asokoro, Guzape, and Maitama.

“Let’s see how it goes, and with God’s grace, it will go well because Mr. President has good intentions for everyone,” he remarked.

The minister also revealed plans to perform security profiling of commercial buses and taxi operators within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), stating that they must also utilize the Abuja taxi color and that some of the tricycle and taxi operators in Abuja were informants to criminals.

“No one will be allowed to drive a bus or cab starting in January of next year unless they have received security profile approval and are wearing the Abuja color.

Therefore, there is nothing like driving a car. We won’t permit that as of January. In order to avoid a scarcity, we would have also imported more cars,” he continued.

Wike stressed that he would not sanction funding for conferences that would not assist the youth and tasked Abdullahi Ango, the Mandate Secretary of the Youth Development Secretariat, with creating proposals and programs that will benefit the youth, such as skill development.

The minister also revealed intentions to reopen the defunct Nyanya, Abuja, skills acquisition center, which provided ICT and other training to young people.
