On Friday, January 17, 2025, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) successfully put a new 110MVA power transformer into service at the Isolo 132/33kV Transmission Substation in Lagos. Executives from significant electricity distribution companies, such as EKO Disco and Ikeja Electric, as well as the Honourable Commissioner for Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Biodun Ogunleye, and the Honourable Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, attended the event.

In TCN’s effort to increase Nigeria’s capacity for transmitting power, this milestone represents a significant advancement. TCN’s MD/CEO, Engr. (Dr.) Sule A. Abdulaziz, expressed his pride in the project’s completion and emphasized its contribution to fortifying the country’s grid. The first of these is the 110MVA transformer, which is powered by a Service Level Agreement (SLA), is the first project of its kind to be finished and energized by TCN. It will add 88MW to the Isolo substation’s capacity, increasing its total capacity to 184MW. This upgrade will greatly improve the supply of electricity to important areas, such as Ajao Estate, Airport Road, and Isolo Local Council, benefiting both residential and commercial customers.

Chief Adebayo Adelabu, the Honourable Minister of Power, praised the collaboration between TCN and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), which provided funding for the project. He emphasized that the completion of this transformer aligns with the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on driving economic growth through improved energy infrastructure. The Minister acknowledged ongoing challenges in the power sector, including aging infrastructure, grid disturbances, and vandalism, and reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing these issues.

“Energy is critical to economic growth and job creation,” Chief Adelabu remarked. “This project contributes to a stronger energy foundation, particularly in vital economic zones like Lagos, and will help propel our nation’s development.”

The Isolo transformer project is part of a wider initiative by TCN to expand Nigeria’s transmission grid. In 2024, TCN installed and energized over 42 power transformers nationwide, helping to improve the stability and reliability of the national grid.

Both the Minister and Engr. Abdulaziz emphasized the importance of continued collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure the sustainability of such projects. They also highlighted the urgent need to tackle vandalism, which continues to pose a significant threat to the country’s energy infrastructure.

The commissioning of the 110MVA power transformer at Isolo is expected to enhance power reliability in Lagos, a major economic hub, and set a precedent for future infrastructure initiatives aimed at addressing Nigeria’s energy challenges. The successful completion of this project reinforces the importance of developing a resilient and sustainable energy sector to support the nation’s growth.

The event concluded with a collective commitment from all involved parties to continue working together towards improving the nation’s power supply and ensuring a brighter energy future for all Nigerians.
