The development of a military base in Illela town has been announced by the government of Sokoto State. Supporting military operations in the area and addressing the nation’s growing security concerns in the northwest are the two goals of this endeavor.
The state governor’s economic adviser, Dr. Bashir Achida, disclosed that the base will be turned over to the federal government upon completion by the constitution. Achida stressed the significance of protecting people’s lives and property, especially in light of Sokoto’s critical role in the country’s agricultural and economic development.
In Illela town, a military base is presently being built to assist military operations in the area. After it is finished, the federal government will take possession of this base.
The state government has given support to security services with 140 operating cars in an effort to improve responsiveness and mobility. Major roads are also being built to enable military access to remote areas, guaranteeing prompt action in the event of security breaches.
The state administration had earlier established community guards, who now drive 40 Hilux cars and 700 motorcycles. With this newfound authority, they can work in tandem with the military and other security services to combat criminal activity and banditry.
Achida emphasized how vulnerable the state is as a result of its international border and agricultural importance, which makes it a desirable target for robbers and antisocial groups ¹ ² ³. Sokoto hopes to make a greater contribution to the country’s efforts to fight poverty and food shortages with a secure environment.
