As a result, the US State Department has cut funding to the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a critical initiative that provides HIV treatment in Africa and other developing countries.

The suspension is scheduled to continue at least 90 days, with the possibility of an extension if the program is not granted an exemption in the coming weeks.

 

With an annual budget of $6.5 billion, PEPFAR has helped provide HIV/AIDS treatment to more than 20.6 million individuals around the world.
