The burning of the Ikwerre Local Government Council Secretariat in Isiokpo, which was purportedly set ablaze by political thugs, has been denounced by Rivers State Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara.

During his visit to examine the damage, Governor Fubara underlined the necessity for responsible politics, underlining that violence has no place in the political process.

“Seeing this destruction is disheartening,” he said, expressing his profound regret over the devastation. Politics should be practiced responsibly; we don’t have to ruin the government or ourselves.” The irony of the situation was also brought out by Fubara, who noted that the council secretariat—constructed by the previous chairman—was intended to be a legacy project but was instead reduced to ruins due to political violence.

The governor added that money meant for other significant initiatives would now be redirected to fix the harm. He made it clear that his followers did not launch the attack when he pleaded the security services to carry out a comprehensive investigation and prosecute those guilty.

This event fits into a larger trend of political upheaval in Rivers State, where there have been allegations of property destruction and violence in several local government districts. Concerns over the necessity of responsible and nonviolent politics in the area have been raised by the circumstances.
