Emilia Perez, Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical, will represent France in the Best International Feature Film category at the 2025 Oscars.
In Emilia Perez, transgender actor Karla Sofia Gascón plays Emilia, the main character and head of the cartel. To allow Perez live true to herself, Emilia hires Rita, an underpaid lawyer played by Zoe Saldana, to help fake her death.
The movie, which debuted in theaters in France on August 21, earned the Best Actress prize at the Cannes Film Festival in France for all four of its actresses—Gascón, Saldana, Adriana Paz, and Selena Gomez. Attracted 737,000 viewers and brought in almost $5.9 million. Netflix is scheduled to launch it on November 13.
A shortlist of four films, including “The Count of Monte Cristo” by Alexandre de La Patelliere and Mathieu Delaporte, the French-produced Indian drama “All We Imagine As Light” by Payal Kapadia, and “Misericordia” by Alain Guiraudie, presented fierce competition for the movie.
Audiard’s Page 114 and Why Not Productions are producing Emilia Perez. The Veterans handled international sales and mediated the Netflix agreement with CAA Media Finance.
