In Edo State’s Etsako Central Local Government Area, bodies are being swept away as floodwaters continue to destroy and drown towns along the River Niger.
The bodies were washed away in the nearby Udaba community.
In a conversation with reporters in Benin City, Joseph Odemokpai, a councillor for Ward 8 of Udaba, Ofukpu, Agbavo, and Osomhegbe in the local government, revealed this.
Odemokpai added that the extreme cold brought on by the flood was claimed to have killed a few local residents.
He claims that the impacted communities are still experiencing flooding and high water levels. “We are attempting to relocate our people to the camp for safety as the entire community is devastated by flooding.”
In Wards 9 and 10, which comprise Anegbete, Udochi, Ogomere, Ifekhu, and Ofukpo, among other communities in all impacted local governments, the flood scenario is identical.
“The river in Udaba has carried several dead bodies away from the graves. The extreme cold brought on by the flood has even killed a few people.
“The destructive flood washed away farm produce, livestock, and property; houses and farmlands with cassava, rice, yam, and other crops were submerged,” he stated.
Nonetheless, he urged the federal, state, and local governments to support the impacted communities.
He pointed out that the local government’s officials are now acting while they wait for the state and federal governments to complement the council’s efforts.
In order to help the communities, the councillor also urged the Edo State Emergency Management Agency (EdoSEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
Etsako East, Etsako Central, and Esan South East are the local governments in the state that have been impacted by the flood, and among the communities impacted are Udaba, Anegbete, Ekperi, Osomhegbe, Ogoimeri, Iowawa, Ofukpu, Ifekhu, Agenebode, Ubiaja, and Ilushi.
