Customers of the Nigerian energy distribution business Aba Power in Abia State will see an increase in their electricity rates of more than 50%.
This was revealed by the business in a consumer notification distributed via its official X handle.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, or NERC, approved the raise, according to the disco.
On January 1st, 2025, the new tariff regime went into effect.
Customers classified as Band A feeders will now pay between N219.70 and N241.45 per kWh instead of N99/kWh, according to the increase.
Band C feeders would pay between N145 and N205/kWh, while Band B electricity users will pay between N180.77 and N203/kWh.
Aba DisCo blamed the increase on the macroeconomic conditions it was dealing with.
Additionally, we would like to let you know that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has recently granted us permission to modify electricity rates, which will take effect on January 1, 2025.
“With this change, we will be able to mitigate the impact of recent macroeconomic events in Nigeria on our capacity to maintain our high level of customer service while adhering to legal requirements.”
According to reports NERC authorized an increase in electricity rates for DisCos in April of last year.
