As we continue our journey through the 16 Days of Activism, today we focus on the critical role economic empowerment plays in preventing and responding to gender-based violence.
The Link Between Economic Empowerment and GBV
Economic dependence is a significant barrier to women’s ability to escape abusive relationships. When women have control over their own finances, they are more likely to:
Leave abusive relationships
Support themselves and their children
Make independent decisions about their lives
Participate in economic activities, increasing their autonomy
Ways to Promote Economic Empowerment
Education and Skills Training: Provide women with access to education, vocational training, and skills development programs.
Access to Credit and Financial Services: Offer microfinance programs, savings accounts, and other finance.
