The 2024 National Children’s Leadership Conference (NCLC) in Abuja will bring together young leaders with the participation of Vice President Kashim Shettima, Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike, and other dignitaries.
At a press conference in Abuja on Monday, Hon. Bamidele Salam (PDP, Osun), the creator and president of the Children of Africa Leadership and Values Development Initiative (CALDEV), revealed this information.
It is planned for November 17 and 21, 2024, according to the House’s Public Accounts Committee Chairman.
Salam stated that the NCLC this year would be an essential forum for empowering Nigerian youth between the ages of 12 and 17, assisting them in gaining leadership abilities and having fruitful conversations about civic duty.
A varied and inclusive gathering centered on national unity, cohesion, and sustainable development will be fostered by the event, which will bring together young leaders from all around Nigeria.
In order to foster national unity, loyalty, integration, and patriotism, the program’s guiding principle is to bring together Nigeria’s largest and most diverse group of young leaders. “This initiative aims to shape the leaders of tomorrow, equipping our youth to contribute to national development and sustainability actively,” he stated.
Every year on November 20, Universal Children’s Day is observed worldwide, and the 2024 conference falls on that date. “Empowering Young Voices, Building a Legacy for Sustainable Development” is the topic of the event, which will include panel discussions, skills-building sessions, leadership seminars, and campaigning for children’s rights.
In order to leave a lasting impression on the attendees, this year’s conference has been carefully planned. With the help of the 2024 NCLC, we are sure that young Nigerians would be equipped to thrive and contribute significantly to society.
“Notable Nigerian officials will also take part in the event. Expected to come as the Distinguished Special Guest of Honor is Vice President Kashim Shettima, who sponsored the conference the year before.
Shettima’s presence at the 2023 conference encouraged many young people, Salam stated, adding, “We are grateful for his unwavering commitment to youth development.
“A mentorship session for attendees will be led by Rt. Hon. Speaker Dr. Abba Tajudeen throughout the conference. Speaker Abbass will provide insights into leadership and governance. He is well-known for his support of children’s issues and their inclusion in policy-making. Salam said, “His session will offer invaluable guidance on how young people can shape public policy.”
Hon. Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, will speak about legislative reforms and youth leadership, highlighting the influence of youth on Nigeria’s legislative future. “His presence highlights the significance of policy-making and civic engagement for youth leadership,” Salam stated.
He went on to say that the event’s chief host, His Excellency Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, would speak to attendees about the real-world applications of leadership. Salam was excited about Wike’s involvement, pointing out that the young leaders present would learn a lot from his vast experience in governing.
“Plan International’s Country Director, Mr. Charles Usie, will also be a keynote speaker, sharing his knowledge of youth development and empowerment.”
Salam also emphasized how young Nigerians are recognized who have demonstrated exceptional achievements in their fields.
According to him, one of the “Early Achievers” of NCLC 2024 is Ashezi Akwashiki, a poet, published novelist, and 10-year-old education advocate who has won praise from all over the world for her work advocating for girls’ rights and education.
Additionally honored is 16-year-old student and inventor Master Sheun Ayomide Samuel, who has created cutting-edge, energy-efficient devices including fans and rechargeable lighting.
Another honoree is 15-year-old Maxwell Anyanwu Munachinso, an AI specialist and ICT consultant who has gained attention for his work as a software developer and coding instructor. Additionally honored is 14-year-old Safiya Alkali Ajikolo, who won an award and was named the Best Student for three years in a row.
“All of the participants in NCLC 2024 can draw inspiration from the remarkable talent and inventiveness exhibited by these young people,” said Salam.
There will be a variety of activities at the conference to promote leadership, decision-making, and critical thinking. A visit to the National Assembly, where they will see a parliamentary session and take part in a simulated session, is one of the instructive tours that participants will take.
Additionally, there will be plenary talks on skills development, financial literacy, leadership, and child rights activism.
