He declared: “This year’s convocation marks yet another important turning point in this administration’s history. It is noteworthy because it combines the 29th and 30th convocation ceremonies in this illustrious fortress of learning.
There are 12,450 graduates in total from the combined convocation. The breakdown is as follows: With 303 PhDs, 608 master’s degrees, and 246 postgraduate diplomas, the total comes to 1,167. Additionally, the VC declared that three distinguished Nigerians—Dr. Itanwan James, Mrs. Halima Zakaria, and Chief Effiong Afiakure—would receive honorary degrees from the university.
He went on to say that three exceptional university professors will receive honorary distinguished professorial degrees, while Akpan Ekpo, a professor of public finance policy and former vice chancellor of the university, would receive the honorary professor emeritus degree.
They include Professor Godfrey Udoh from the Department of Estate Management, Professor Essien Urua from the Department of Linguistics and Nigerian Languages, and a former VC, Professor Enefiok Essien, SAN, from the Faculty of Law.
The VC used the opportunity to highlight the accomplishments the university has made since the beginning of his administration, but he also listed the difficulties, such as theft of facilities and equipment, a lack of funding, encroachment on university property, and a lack of personnel in vital areas of study brought on by the embargo on employment by the federal government.
