Festus Osifo, the national president of TUC, stated that the majority of governors prioritized constructing flyovers above fixing the states’ deficiencies in primary healthcare facilities and educational gaps.
He made this claim during an interview on Wednesday.
According to Osifo, organized labor was more worried about how the Tax Reform Bill would establish subnational responsible government.
He emphasized that the Tax Reform Bill might encourage governors to manage their states effectively.
“At the moment, our attention is on the tax bill’s provisions, state productivity, and the utilization of these monies. We have essentially promoted the idea that the majority of sub-nationals are incredibly unproductive at this time. They distribute profits in places where they shouldn’t be. When you visit some of these states, you see how people are suffering in the rural areas; they are going through terrible hardships, but they are spending money on flyovers as though that’s where life stops.
In a state where there are problems with maternal mortality, primary health care, and primary education, they count the number of flyovers they have been able to construct.
Therefore, there has been a misalignment of priorities in the state administration and some of these subnational entities. Thus, we have emphasized these throughout time,” he stated.
The president of the Trade Union Congress revealed that governors were compelled to adopt the minimum wage due to pressure and the positive involvement of organized labor state chapters.
“Many of our state chapters are supporting those discussions, including Labour. Some states were eventually able to raise the minimum wage above the 70,000 barrier after the minimum wage issue reached the state level.
