Residents of Tanwalbougou in the eastern region of Burkina Faso are currently fleeing their houses following the occupation of their village by suspected terrorist groups.

According to local sources, the inhabitants are currently taking sanctuary in the neighboring city of Fada N’Gourma.

Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency specialist specializing in the Lake Chad region, revealed this in a post on his X account.

The widespread displacement, according to Makama, underscores the nation’s escalating security dilemma.

The security expert pointed out that in spite of the ruling authorities’ attempts to quell insurgency, armed groups have persisted in taking over communities.

According to Makama, residents were forced to flee their houses and cattle in search of safety after heavily armed extremists invaded Tanwalbougou, according to witnesses.

“The situation is dire.” A local who came to the city with his family remarked, “People are running away with only what they can carry, and many have nowhere to stay in Fada.”

Makama added that the attack exacerbates Burkina Faso’s humanitarian predicament, where armed non-state organizations continue to rule a sizable portion of the nation.
