The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has awarded degree certificates to six inmates of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje, Abuja, who completed various academic programmes while in custody. The graduates earned two Master’s degrees and four Bachelor’s degrees in disciplines including Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution, Political Science, Criminology and Security Studies.

The Controller-General of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), Mr Sylvester Nwakuche, commended the inmates for their resilience and determination, describing education as a powerful tool for rehabilitation and reintegration. The event highlighted NOUN’s commitment to inclusive education and the NCoS’ focus on equipping inmates with skills for productive lives after release.

Officials urged the graduates to be good ambassadors and make positive use of their certificates, while the ceremony also featured counselling sessions on re-entry and skill development. The graduates expressed gratitude for the opportunity and pledged to contribute meaningfully to society upon release.
