Russia demanded Tuesday that NATO renounce its 2008 pledge to grant Ukraine membership in the US-led military alliance in the future and that Ukraine accept neutrality.
Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the foreign ministry, said this on Tuesday, adding that while Russia did not approve of Ukraine joining NATO, Moscow no longer found it sufficient to simply deny it access.
“It is worth noting that a refusal to accept Kyiv into NATO is not enough now. The alliance must disavow the Bucharest promises of 2008.
“Otherwise, this problem will continue to poison the atmosphere on the European continent,” Zakharova said.
