Despite being a Yoruba man, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has stated that he would choose Nigeria than the Oodua Republic.

Obasanjo’s statement came after liberation fighter Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Igboho, recently petitioned the UK government on behalf of the Yoruba Nation.

Igboho has petitioned UK Prime Minister Keir Stermer to have his administration take the establishment of Yoruba nation into consideration.

Obasanjo, however, disassociated himself from the Yoruba nation that was being proposed.

The former president spoke during a visit to his home in Abeokuta, Ogun State, by a team from the League of Northern Democrats headed by Ibrahim Shekarau, a former governor of Kano State.

According to Obasanjo, regionalism, which existed prior to Nigeria’s independence, was the primary reason of the country’s protracted disunity.

“It’s time we started working for the national interest,” he declared. Although you have named your organization the League of Northern Democrats, I wish you had dubbed it the National League of Democrats as your origins shouldn’t be an issue.

“My Nigerian identity shouldn’t be undermined by my place of birth. Being a Nigerian will be more significant than belonging to the Republic of Oodua.

“I am definitely pleased to be Yoruba, but my Nigerian heritage shouldn’t be a hindrance to my Yoruba identity.

“The best man for the job is what we need.” Where he comes from is irrelevant. We need to straighten up.
