Felix Osakwe, the National Rescue Movement’s (NRM) nominee for president in 2023, has requested that President Bola Tinubu resign from his capacity as minister of petroleum because the latter has done little to address the fuel problem.
He said this while criticizing Tinubu and the management of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) for the nation’s continuous gasoline shortage.
Osakwe specifically criticized President Bola Tinubu, who doubles as the minister of petroleum, and NNPCL managing director Mele Kyari for their inability to appropriately handle the situation.
During the weekend, Osakwe questioned Tinubu’s choice to become the country’s minister of petroleum, asking, “How can a president of a country make himself the Minister of Petroleum?” Among 200 million Nigerians, he had no faith in anybody.
He went on to say that this choice raises questions about accountability and transparency in the energy industry.
Osakwe continued his criticism of the NNPCL, claiming that there is “a lot of conspiracy” around the way the petroleum sector is managed and hinting at a hidden goal that has made the nation’s fuel shortages worse.

Osakwe also criticized the NNPCL for trying to malign the Dangote Refinery after company representatives stated that the fuel the refinery produced was of inferior quality.

Osakwe also criticized the NNPCL for trying to malign the Dangote Refinery after company representatives stated that the fuel the refinery produced was of inferior quality.
He described the announcement as a “disaster to the economy” and voiced shock that the officer in charge of it had not been disciplined.
Barrister Odemwige Osaro, an expert in oil and gas, also commented on the matter, pointing out that Kyari’s prolonged leadership of the NNPCL is not in Nigerians’ best interests.
Osaro drew attention to the fact that, in the five years after Kyari was appointed GMD/CEO in 2019, the price of gasoline has soared from N145.48 per liter to about N1,000, exacerbating the country’s economic woes.
Osaro stressed that many Nigerians now doubt the administration’s commitment to resolving the continuing fuel crisis as a result of President Tinubu’s hesitancy in reorganizing the NNPCL.
