Femi Kuti, a Grammy-nominated Afrobeat singer, has revealed that some of his family’s biggest adversaries are Yoruba.
Speaking at the 2024 Felaberation Festival in Lagos, he singled out former President Olusegun Obasanjo and late business mogul MKO Abiola as major opponents of the Kuti family.
He added that his family does not believe in tribalism because they were raised with pan-Africanist values.
“Brothers and sisters, something extremely essential is happening in our lives: ethnic problems. You call it tribalism. Please do not draw the Anikulapos into your idiocy,” he stated.
“We grew up alongside Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Marcus Garvey, Patrice Lumumba, Mrs. Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, and Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
“Pan-Africanism was the prevailing ideology. So I didn’t grow up with sentimentality. I observed nice and terrible individuals. I have both amazing and horrible European friends. I have both fantastic and awful African friends.
“One of our [the Kuti family’s] greatest opponents, as you know, is the Yoruba people, specifically Obasanjo and Abiola. Our family does not have a tribal mentality.
