Hamas commander Saeed Attallah Ali, his wife, and their two daughters were killed by Israeli bombings in northern Lebanon on Saturday at their residence in the Beddawi camp close to Tripoli.

According to Al Jazeera, this is the first known strike in the region since the Gaza conflict broke out almost a year ago.

Israel’s military activities in Lebanon have expanded, focusing on areas farther inland and expanding beyond the border areas.

Early on Saturday, there were reports of explosions in Beirut’s southern suburbs. Hezbollah stronghold of Dahiyeh’s residents were apparently alerted prior to the raids, though it’s unclear how many civilians actually evacuated.

The intensification comes after Israeli raids on Friday, which were said to have killed key military leaders, and which were directed at Hezbollah’s intelligence headquarters in southern Beirut. Furthermore, Israeli forces attacked a mosque next to Salah Ghandour Hospital in southern Lebanon, alleging that Hezbollah was using it as a command center.
