Many Nigerians, particularly young people, have occupied the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) towers in Abuja and demanded that Mele Kyari, the company’s group chief executive officer, leave immediately.

Citing Nigeria’s economic difficulties, long fuel lines, and soaring petrol costs, the demonstrators, organized by a few civil society organizations, or CSOs, characterized Kyari’s leadership as inept.

The demonstrators claimed that the NNPCL leader’s leadership had failed while holding signs with various statements, including “we demand the immediate resignation of Kyari.”

Speaking to reporters, one of the organizers, Abdullahi Bilal, demanded that the “fraudulent fuel subsidy” and the purported importation of tainted fuel be stopped right away, calling it a destructive practice.

We demand today that Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), resign immediately.

“We call for the end of the bogus fuel subsidy system, which has enriched a few at the expense of others. To bring justice, competition, and transparency to our oil industry, complete deregulation is required.

Additionally, we call for the cessation of petroleum imports into Nigeria that are tainted. He declared, “This destructive practice must end right away, and those who do it must be held accountable for the harm done to our cars, businesses, and livelihoods.”
