Coach Bankole Olowookere’s under-17 national team’s excellent performance during the competition earned the Flamingos the Fair Play award.
By accruing the fewest bookings of any participating team, the Flamingos set themselves apart and showed their dedication to fair and courteous play on the field. This distinction resulted from their sportsmanship being noted.
The Nigerian girls won all three of their group-stage matches during the Dominican Republic event, demonstrating their abilities and tenacity.
But when they encountered a strong opponent in the United States of America in the quarterfinals, their adventure came to an end. The Flamingos lost 2-0 to the American squad after failing to make any progress in a difficult game.
The Flamingos’ performance during the under-17 FIFA World Cup was outstanding, and their honesty and sportsmanship made a lasting impression despite the heartache of elimination.
In the meantime, North Korea won the tournament and the championship title following an exciting final match against Spain that culminated in a dramatic penalty shootout with a 4-3 North Korean victory.
