The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has come under fire from the media office of former Kogi State governor Yahaya Bello, who claims the organization is carrying out a politically driven “hatchet job” on the former governor.
The EFCC’s recent activities and public releases, according to the statement signed by Ohiare Michael, are motivated more by personal agendas and bias than by a sincere desire to fight corruption.
Bello had previously been proclaimed wanted by the EFCC, garnering a lot of media attention.
According to reports, he had willingly shown up at the agency’s headquarters, but no charges were brought against him, thus he was then permitted to depart.
This has led to concerns about the EFCC’s motivations and the objectivity of its work.
The statement implied that there were hidden agendas behind the EFCC’s actions by posing the hypothetical question, “If the agency was truly interested in prosecution, would the agency not have taken him in on that day?”
The media office emphasized that the battle against corruption needs to be inclusive and equitable and further requested President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to step in and resolve the continuing conflict between Bello and the EFCC.
The declaration continued, “Nigeria belongs to all Nigerians,” and it called for an equitable system of responsibility and government.
