The Delta State Police Command in recent operations has arrested an ex-convict, suspected armed robbers, and a man caught with live ammunition.
Delta Commissioner of Police, Abaniwonda Olufemi, confirmed the arrests in a statement on Wednesday.
He explained that the breakthroughs were achieved by operatives of the Eagle-Net Special Squad during patrols and coordinated investigations, mentioning that one of the arrests occurred on August 30 when a patrol team flagged down a Toyota Sienna along the Asaba–Ibusa Road.
The driver, identified as 58-year-old Albert Opene of Ashaka, was found with 75 rounds of live cartridges hidden beneath the driver’s seat.
“Upon search of the vehicle, seventy-five rounds of live cartridges were recovered underneath the driver’s seat of the vehicle.
“Suspect was arrested, exhibit recovered, and investigation is ongoing,” the police said.
The command said the other arrest was carried out when operatives acting on a distress call over a stolen motorcycle, arrested two suspects in Asaba.
One of them, 27-year-old Precious Okoro, had only been released from prison weeks earlier after serving a two-year jail term for motorcycle theft.
“The said suspect is an ex-convict who was released from Ogwashi-Uku correctional facility on the 6th of August 2025 after completing his jail term of two years for a similar offence of stealing a motorcycle.
“The suspect went back to steal another motorcycle just five days after returning from prison,” the command stated.
His accomplice, 18-year-old Buhari Deyegu, was also apprehended and the missing motorcycle was recovered during the joint operation with members of the Nigeria Hunters Security Services. Police said.
The police further disclosed the arrest of a suspected five-man robbery gang said to be responsible for multiple attacks in Ughelli and other parts of the state.
The gang, led by one Samson Ugbe popularly known as Big Man, had allegedly dispossessed a victim of electronic gadgets, including a 65-inch television, laptops, PlayStation 4 console, and mobile phones and some of the stolen items were traced to Ugbe’s hideout following the arrest of his girlfriend and an accomplice.
The command linked the gang to previous high-profile robberies, including the looting of a warehouse where over 180 bags of rice were carted away, and an armed attack at Niger Delta University, Oghara, in 2024.
“Interrogation of the suspect led to the arrest of the gang leader, Samson Ugbe AKA ‘Big Man’, who has been on the command wanted list, alongside his gang members, Emmanuel Edam, Frank Aminu, Sampson Irorowo and Yahaya Bashir. Also recovered are two suspected stolen vehicles, which were stolen at Ozoro and Orerokpe, respectively,” the police said.
Olufemi assured that all suspects remain in custody and would be charged to court upon completion of investigations. He urged members of the public to continue sharing credible information with the police to strengthen security across the state.
