According to Daniel Bwala, President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Policy Communication, the governors are the only ones opposed to the Tax Reform Bills.

Bwala made this statement in an effort to refute the idea that the northern region opposes the laws.

In the early stages of the bills, the Tax Reform Bill that President Bola Tinubu had sent to the National Assembly was rejected in a joint meeting of the Northern Governors Forum and the Northern Traditional Rulers Council.

On October 3, 2024, Tinubu sent a tax reform measure to the House of Representatives and Senate for approval.

The Federal Inland Revenue Service, or FIRS, will now be known as the Nigeria Revenue Service, or NRS, as part of the bill’s sector reforms.

“The bills for tax reform are here to stay and will be approved. Bwala stated in an appearance on Channels Television, “Let’s forget that it is the North vs. the South; it is the governors who are going to be impacted.”

States’ governors will see a decrease in their income if the derivation is used. These are not just Northern governors; they are found in most states.

It is possible that the northern governors have made the decision to speak out about it.

However, keep in mind that even in the case of local government autonomy, it wasn’t a regional issue; rather, it was still the governors’ because local government autonomy from the beginning was considered an initiative that would weaken their powers…”
