Although the Senator has not yet made a public statement, rumors of his imminent defection have been stoked by his succinct response to questions about the issue “soon”
PDP Leadership and Frosty Relationships
Growing tensions with the state’s PDP leadership are thought to be the reason behind Nwoko’s consideration of the move. Nwoko is a prominent opponent of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
According to reports, the senator’s choice was influenced by his tense relationship with powerful party members as well as the current political climate in Delta State.
There are indications that former Delta Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, who represented Delta North as a senator before Nwoko’s predecessor, Peter Nwaoboshi, is planning to run for office again in 2027 on the PDP platform, according to Vanguard.
This has allegedly led to more conflict because Nwoko is not interested in running for the party’s ticket.
Nwoko’s defection would place him alongside another well-known Delta North politician, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, who previously defected from the PDP to the APC.
If approved, the move might have important ramifications for both sides. Nwoko’s resignation would be a blow to the PDP, which has long controlled Delta State politics. Gaining a well-known person like Nwoko will help the APC’s chances in the state, particularly in the run-up to the general elections in 2027.
