At Lagos House, Marina, Meranda met with members of the State Assembly and GAC, the All Progressives Congress’s (APC) highest decision-making body in Lagos.

More than two-thirds of the 40-member parliamentary house impeached Mudashiru Obasa for suspected misbehavior and other misdeeds, ending his 10-year rule. Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency I, was elected speaker on Monday.

Meranda, who served as Obasa’s deputy until Monday, was elected Speaker right away, making history as the first woman to lead the South-West state’s legislature.

Obasa, a native of Agege Constituency I, was elected to the House for the first time in 2007. Since then, he has been in the chamber. In June 2015, he became a speaker prior to his removal in January 2025.

Abiodun Tobun, an Assembly member from Epe Constituency 1, stated that in order to preserve the “sanctity” and “integrity” of the House, parliamentarians removed Obasa as Speaker.

Tobun informed reporters that members of the 40-member Assembly unanimously decided to remove Obasa from office.

“The Constitution clearly states that the House has the authority to control its operations,” he stated. After the House members decided they had had enough of Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, we unanimously decided today that Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda Lasbat should take over as Speaker of the House.

All members of the parliament agreed with the resolution, so whatever. We cannot let this parliament wane while we open our House. its responsibility to ensure the restoration of the House’s integrity and sanctity is owed to Lagos State and its people.
