Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi State, and two other people have filed bail applications, and Justice Maryann Anenih of the Federal Capital Territory’s (FCT) High Court has set December 10 as the date for her decision.
After hearing arguments from Bello’s attorney, Joseph Bodunde Dauda, SAN, and Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, representing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, or EFCC, in favor of and against the bail request, the judge set the date.
On a number of factors, Daudu had begged the court to grant the former governor bail.
The senior attorney stated, among other things, that unless the anti-graft agency proves otherwise, the law presumes him innocent.
Additionally, Daudu said that Bello was not a flight risk because he had not left the nation in the previous seven years.
Additionally, he stated that since the EFCC had already finished the investigation and brought charges against the defendants, the former governor would not tamper with witnesses or exhibits.
Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, the EFCC’s attorney, countered that Bello may probably tamper with the witnesses and materials.
After that, Justice Maryann Anenih declared that she will reveal her ruling on December 10.
Until the verdicts are rendered, the judge mandated that the three defendants be held in EFCC custody.
As you may remember, the EFCC had already granted administrative bail to Umar Shoaib Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu, when the former governor was making his first court appearance.
