Omoni clarified that after taking a hiatus to raise her children overseas, the incident occurred when she returned to Nigeria.
“At an audition, I was asked to kiss a director, and I didn’t understand why he would do that,” she added. “Is this an audition?” I asked. and I replied, “Sorry, I can’t do it because I didn’t see any reason I would be kissing you, the director, when we are not on set.” He responded, “Yeah, I just want to see.”
“So I said, ‘Oh, I’m sorry, I can’t.'” You know what? I ended up traveling back without playing the role because I didn’t obtain the one for which I traveled.
“Idris Elba’s rendition of “Okonkwo” in Things Fall Apart is perfectly acceptable.”
Omoni Oboli, meantime, is in favor of Idris Elba, a Hollywood actor, playing the major role in the impending movie adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s beloved book “Things Fall Apart.”
Igboland’s pre-colonial existence is portrayed in the book, along with the late 19th-century arrival of European colonial soldiers and missionaries.
The novel’s protagonist, Okonkwo, was portrayed by legendary Nigerian actor Pete Edochie in the initial adaptations of the film in 1971 and the miniseries in 1987.
A24 is now working on a new series under the 22Summers name, which has drawn a lot of criticism. Idris Elba and Gina Carter are executive producers on the show.
However, Omoni Oboli stated in a Saturday interview with Channels TV that since Elba is African, there is nothing wrong with him playing the lead.
Africans are more equipped to tell their own stories, the director continued.
