The FAME Foundation has unveiled the Femicide Tracker to tackle Gender-Based Violence (GBV) against women, as part of its efforts to mark the commemoration of the 2024 16Days of Activism.
The 16Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that commences on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until December 10, Human Rights Day. It aimed at ending violence against women and girls affecting one in three women worldwide.
The Executive Director of FAME Foundation, Arabinrin Aderonke during the unveiling at the press conference in Abuja underscored the significance of this year’s theme, “Towards Beijing +30: UNiTE to End Violence Against Women and Girls”.
She explained that GBV is a pervasive problem that affects individuals, families, and communities.
While stressing that this year’s theme emphasizes the significance of collective effort and lasting change, Aderonke also mentioned the Foundation’s goal to establish forums for survivors to share their experiences, educate others, and inspire action for a world free from violence against women.
Outlining the Foundations’ activities in the next 16 days, the Executive Director said; “this year, we are organizing a series of campaigns and outreach programs to engage communities and raise awareness.
Additionally, we are launching an online campaign with the hashtag #HereForHer, which will be featured on our social media platforms.
“This campaign is a call to action for everyone to stand united against gender-based violence and advocate for a future where no woman or girl lives in fear of violence or discrimination.
“This year, we have witnessed a troubling surge in femicide cases, and we must act. To facilitate the reporting and documentation of such cases, FAME Foundation has introduced the Femicide Tracker. This tool allows victims and their families to report incidents, ensuring no case goes unnoticed and justice is pursued.”
She emphasized that raising awareness is only the beginning and called for sustained action:
“Each of us has a role to play in ending gender-based violence. By working together, we can create a protective environment for women and girls, ensuring they can live safely and freely, without fear of harm. Through unity, education, and action, we can achieve meaningful progress.”
Aderonke called on the government, civil society organizations, and individuals to collaborate in creating lasting change, supporting survivors, and ensuring a safer and more equitable future for women and girls.
The FAME Foundation is a non-governmental organization established to solicit, encourage and advance the social, emotional and economic wellbeing of women and girls as well as formulate programs within the framework of national development plan with a view to enhancing the participation of women and advocate for gender parity in the society.
