The Osun State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, or NAWOJ, has urged governments and interested parties to work together to eradicate gender-based violence, or GBV, against women and girls.

In addition to calling for an end to the impunity of GBV abusers, the group encouraged the public to make investments in women and girls.

In addition, NAWOJ urged governments and organizations to adopt, carry out, and finance national action plans that advance the welfare of women and girls.

Abisola Ariwodola, the chairperson of the Osun NAWOJ, and Oluwaranti Ojewumi, the secretary, jointly signed the statement that made this request.

In the statement, NAWOJ condemned the widespread prevalence of abuse that girls were exposed to from an early age and highlighted the violence that women and girls faced on a daily basis.

NAWOJ also expressed disapproval of the prevalence of GBV committed against women by their husbands, predators, and family members, noting that some of these cases resulted in death.

“We believe that it is possible to stop violence against women and girls. We urge the government to properly implement the Violence Against Persons Prohibition, or VAPP, law in the state and call on stakeholders to enhance their support of women and girls.

“Gender-based violence against girls and women may be stopped. Thus, we urge everyone to band together and put an end to this threat to women and girls.

“We hereby warn those who engage in gender-based violence to stop, and they should also be aware that the Osun State government no longer condones such evil against women.”

In support of women and girls, it stated that “ending gender-based violence is not a one-time call, but a continuous one, until it is totally eradicated.”

Additionally, NAWOJ praised the Osun State Government for establishing programs, preventive policies, and measures in favor of women and girls, as well as for approving the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Women Affairs, Children, and Social Welfare to fully support them.
